I read a 1977 facsimile of the 1971 Signet edition. Before any of these stories appeared, Delany had already written eight novels, but when he wrote the last of them he was still aged in his 20’s. These stories were originally published in a four-year period from 1966 to 1970. Delany’s first 10 published short stories. This is not to say that the books are not worth reading, but that they require plenty of effort to find the rewards of reading, and my personal interests are not targeted towards these particular explorations, per se.Driftglass collects Samuel R. I also really like the Neveryon series, although I think they are a bit much what with the heavy emphasis on linguistics and sexual politics set in a fantasy narrative. However, I do slot them into the "Speculative Fiction" genre, as both are extremely experimental: Dhalgren's fractured narrative structure and fractured geography are so complimentary complementary as to make the whole of the book something more than if it were a straight read Hogg's exploration of sexual and violent depravity is a refreshing perspective on morality as social construct. In my opinion neither Dhalgren nor Hogg are Science Fiction. I rank Dhalgren in my top three novels of all time (the other two being Infinite Jest, and Wolfe's Solar Cycle, technically a couple novels, but whatever).Īs well, his pornographic, depraved nightmare of a novel, HOGG, is well worth reading. If you put the effort into it, it is immensely rewarding. It's a fractured story about a fractured narrator struggling in a fractured city. There IS a plot, albeit frantic and discombobulated.
